Data engineer

Imagine, you are on a cruise ship enjoying your well-deserved holiday. Your drinking a cocktail while enjoying the nice weather on the sun deck near the pool. Everything is perfect. Meanwhile, in the vessel’s engine room, one of the chief mechanics is getting an alert on his mobile. Wärtsilä data detected that the temperature of the main fuel pumps is increasing unexpectedly. After a quick check-up, it seems that one of the valves is broken and needs to be repaired immediately. Due to our machine learning algorithms, unplanned downtime of the cruise ship was prevented.

Functieomschrijving

We are looking for a (junior/medior) data engineer. Your challenge will be to ensure the platforms continuing improvement and further development in line with our business needs. You will work closely with multiple teams and supporting their data needs. You are excited by the prospect of optimizing or even re-designing our platform’s data architecture for next generation of products and data initiatives.

Your success in this role will be defined by your interest to connect with varying stakeholders and transform data into a format that can be easily analysed.
We take pride to ensure our equipment experts can effectively use the data from hundreds of ocean-going vessels and power plants to provide insights toward our customers.

What are your main tasks and responsibilities?
• Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata to extract value from unnormalized data sets.
• Build the infrastructure required for optimal sharing of data to consumers using AWS technologies.
• Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.

Gevraagd wordt

• A successful history in building and optimizing data pipelines, architectures and data sets.
• Experience with stream-processing platforms e.g. Kafka + Kafka Streams
• Solid record in designing attracting and well-functioning APIs
• Hands-on experience with time-series databases and data quality issues that come with it
• Fluent with Java/Python scripting
• Able to translate business requirements to data-driven KPIs and able to provide clear feedback to business based on data metrics.
• Monitoring and troubleshooting the data pipelines on a daily basis.
• You are willing to take ownership of cross-functional topics and drive them to completion.
• Interest in operational aspects of running an IoT platform.
• Interest in automated testing and test driven development is a plus.
• Willingness to participate in agile planning of features as part of the scrum team.
